Skáldsagan The Mark of Zorro eftir bandaríska rithöfundinn Johnston McCulley gerist í Kaliforníu við upphaf 19. aldarinnar, þegar landsvæðið tilheyrði ennþá Mexíkó. Hér segir frá Don Diego Vega, sem einnig gengur undir dulnefninu Señor Zorro (zorro er spænska og þýðir refur). Grímuklæddur og vopnaður sverði berst hann gegn illmennunum Ramon herforingja og Gonzales liðþjálfa. Titillinn er vísun í þann vana hetjunnar að merkja óvini sína eða nálæga hluti með því að rista á þá bókstafinn Z með sverði sínu.
Sagan kom fyrst út árið 1919 sem framhaldssaga í fimm hlutum undir titlinum The Curse of Capistrano. Þögla kvikmyndin The Mark of Zorro var gerð eftir sögunni árið 1920 og sló rækilega í gegn hjá almenningi, sem vildi sjá meira af hetjunni fræknu. Sagan var þá gefin út á bók árið 1924 með titli kvikmyndarinnar og fleiri sögur fylgdu í kjölfarið.
